Brent attended Lompoc California High School while his father was principal. He was all-league in basketball, swimming and water polo. He received scholar-athlete of the year in 1993 and was named two-time All Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in 1994 and 1995.

Both parents were all-state athletes in high school. His father competed in track and football in Indiana and his mother in tennis in Texas. His father went on to play football at the University of Wisconsin.

Brent was named to the first team Allstars at the '94 and '95 NCAA Championships. He took a leave of absence from Cal-Berkeley in Spring 1996 semester to train with U.S. National Team. He expected to return for his junior year after the Olympics.
