Gavin was an All-American swimmer in high school who broke a 17-year-old South California swimming record. He was named Orange County Register "Water Polo Player of the Year" (1989) as well as Los Angeles Times "Swimmer of the Year" (1990). His mother, Judy, was a nationally-ranked swimmer. His brother Rob plays for US Junior National Team.

Gavin prefers spending Spring breaks in Yosemite National Park rather than Daytona Beach. He obtained political science degree. He has eclectic tastes in music -- Coltrane before bed and Pantera before matches. Gavin enjoys surfing on Sunday afternoons and plans to play water polo professionally in Europe after the Olympics.
