In his hometown of Honolulu, Chris did not wear shoes or long pants in school until it became mandatory in the 7th grade. He graduated from Punahou High School in 1984 where he was a nationally-ranked swimmer.

He earned a bachelor's degree in economics at University of California, Irvine in 1989 and a MBA from UCI Graduate School of Management in 1992. Chris was UCl's Scholar Athlete of the Year as well as the Big West Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1989. His role models include Magic Johnson, Arthur Ashe and Johann Olav Koss. He appeared in Sports Illustrated 1994 Swimsuit Issue, "MTV Sports" and "Live with Regis and Kathy Lee". Chris is the Olympic spokes person for Kodak and he speaks to children about success and the Olympic experience. He enjoys golf in his spare time.
