Kirk learned how to swim at age four with long-time friend Kristen Babb-Sprague (1992 Olympic gold medalist, synchronized swimmer). He was teamed with current national team members Rick McNair and Colin Keely to win the 1984 California State High School Water Polo Championships.

Kirk combined with Matt Biondi to win a NCAA relay title on Cal Berkeley's swim team. He appeared with water polo team mates in the 1994 Sports Illustrated swim suit issue. He enjoys tennis, golf, photography, reading and movies.
