Alex was born in France and moved to Canada as a child then to California. He speaks English, French, Spanish and Italian.. He speaks French at home with parents. Alex surfed and swam while growing up in Santa Monica. He gained US citizenship in 1985 and graduated from UCLA in 1990 with a degree in Economics.

Alex likes literature and is learning to play the guitar. He was voted to All-World Team following the 1989 World Championships. While playing water polo professionally in Rome, he took Italian classes and art courses in order to appreciate Italy. He is the Olympic spokesman for AT&T. Alex is a member of the Screen Actor's Guild and appeared in 1994 Sports Illustrated swim suit issue, with teammates on "Baywatch" and in advertising for Gillette and Sears. He appeared on the cover of May 1996 Vanity Fair.
